Why the Holiday Season Is the Best Time to Job Hunt (Yes, Really)

By Chere Estrin, December 2025

Every year around Thanksgiving, I hear the same line from job seekers:
“I’ll wait until January to start looking.”

Oh, please. You might as well gift-wrap your dream job and hand it to someone else.

This time of year isn’t a pause in hiring. Iit’s a golden window of opportunity. While everyone else is doing turkey leftovers and online shopping, you can glide past the competition like a legal professional with a same-day deadline and a triple latte.

Let’s break down why December is absolutely the time to stay in the game, if not hit the gas.

Reason #1: Less Competition = More Visibility

When most candidates take a holiday nap, you get the spotlight.
Fewer resumes in the pile. Less noise. More chances to get noticed.

Hiring managers actually open your resume this time of year. They’re so grateful that someone (anyone) is still applying that they might practically kiss the computer screen, as long as no one is watching.

Reason #2: Companies Are Still Hiring and Often Quickly

Many law firms and legal departments have one of two problems in December:

  1. “Use the budget or lose it.” (The money does not roll over into the next year.)
  2. “We already got approval. Please, someone fill this role before the CFO changes their mind and we all go back to missing Saturday Night Football.

Add in the firms launching major January projects, and suddenly December becomes hiring prime time.

No one wants to begin Q1 with an empty chair, especially when trial prep, audits, renewals, fiscal year closeouts, and new litigation calendars kick in. If you’re in the pipeline now, you can be fully onboarded and ready to roll by January 2… Maybe January 5th, while everyone else is still nursing their New Year’s Eve regrets.

Reason #3: Hiring Managers Want to Start January Strong

Look at it this way: attorneys and managers don’t want to hit January in panic mode. They want you trained, oriented, and at least able to find the restroom and the SharePoint folder before the new year.

This urgency works in your favor. Faster interviews. Faster decisions. Fewer hoops.
Honestly, sometimes firms are so ready to hire, they’ll skip the seventh-round interview with the partner who only drops in once a quarter and can’t remember your name.

Reason #4: Networking Is Easier and More Human in December

December softens people. Even partners. (Well… some.)

People are:

  • More generous
  • More relaxed
  • More likely to respond to your email because “’tis the season”
  • More willing to chat over coffee, cocoa, or whatever holiday beverage keeps them going

Reach out now, and your message doesn’t get lost in the giant January “New Year, New Resume” avalanche.

Reason #5: Hiring Bonuses Are on the Table

Here’s the part no one tells you:

Many firms are in such a hurry, they’ll offer hiring bonuses.

We’re talking $3,000–$5,000 or more depending on the role.
That’s real money. Real “this could cover my holiday shopping, thank you very much” money.

If you’re worried about missing your current firm’s year-end bonus, guess what?
Some firms will make up the difference just to get you in the door.
It happens more than you think.

A little holiday magic courtesy of your next employer.

Reason #6: Fewer Interviews, Less Competition, More Desperate Employers

While candidates are baking cookies, firms are baking… anxiety.

Positions that have been open too long suddenly become urgent.
Interview schedules lighten up.
Recruiters rejoice because someone finally applied.

You’re basically walking into a job market where employers are whispering,
“Please, please, please….. just be qualified and show up. Be sure your teeth are in, the cat is not walking on your keyboard and your husband is not in the background still in his shorts.

A dream.

Reason #7: People Are in Better (and More Generous) Moods

It’s true. Even the attorney who never smiles breaks out a grin in December.
(Granted, it might be because they just won a summary judgment, but still.)

Managers are more flexible.
HR is softer.
Recruiters are practically singing.

If there was ever a time to ask for a little grace or a slightly higher salary, this is it.

Reason #8: You Avoid the January Stampede

Most employees are waiting for their bonuses at the end of December. Then, they wait a bit to appear grateful and then they give notice. If you wait until January, you and tens of thousands of others will all suddenly:

  • Update resumes
  • Ping contacts
  • Apply to everything in sight
  • Make recruiters weep

Why join the crowd when you can get ahead of it?

Bottom Line

Don’t buy into the myth that December is a hiring wasteland. It’s not.
It’s one of the most strategic, high-leverage times to move your career forward.

If you want to stand out, snag a hiring bonus, and glide into January employed while everyone else is still rewriting their resumes and updating LinkedIn profiles,… keep going. Keep applying. Keep networking.

Your dream job does not take a holiday break.
And neither should you.
