"New York State’s Family Protection and Domestic Violence Intervention Act needs to be amended to offer more protection to victims of domestic violence, believes St. John’s University Legal Studies’ major Jason Ciarlante, who is asking students for their signature on a petition supporting a bill (A05052), introduced by Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein of Brooklyn, that would amend the law. The amendment would allow victims or potential victims of domestic violence to seek an order of protection against a non-family member in Family Court."

"Through an assignment in an advanced legal research and writing class taught by Ellen Boegel, Assistant Professor of Legal Studies in the College of Professional Studies on the Staten Island campus, Jason became aware of pending state legislation that would amend the Family Court act regarding domestic violence and criminal procedure law. He took it upon himself to write a petition supporting the bill, and set up a table in the Da Silva Center to gather signatures. He also described the issue and presented his platform in hand-outs he created as part of an awareness campaign."
